The job of broadcast journalists is demanding but rewarding, New Trier students found as they wrapped up a 14-hour radiothon on April 6, raising money for Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago.
The day lasted from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. So far, the group has collected more than $5,500 for the hospital.
WNTH invited community members to play instruments for 10-15 minute spans and interviewed an extensive list of celebrity guests, including 14 actors and actresses, media personalities, and former NFL player and R&B singer Darnerien McCants, among others. In all, the effort required hours of preparation.
"It was some of the best radio we have done," said Josh Rubin, head sponsor of WNTH and a teacher in the speech and theatre department. "Kids lined up back-to-back interviews which was impressive. A number of people from Children's came to the studio and called in and they seemed to be really happy with the radio we were producing and the promotion that we gave to the hospital."
The student broadcasters were happy with the results as well, conducting over 30 interviews on a tight schedule, often with only 20 seconds in between interviews.
